The ID Seal: why It matters for innovative companies

In a knowledge-driven economy, investing in Research and Development (R&D) is a key driver of sustainable business growth and competitiveness. In Portugal, this effort can be officially recognised through the ID Seal – Recognition of R&D Practices, awarded by the Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI), Portugal’s national innovation agency.

This seal formally certifies a company’s commitment to innovation, acknowledging consistent, structured practices in the development of new knowledge, technologies, or methodologies. Receiving this certification is more than a technical merit – it’s a public statement that the company is at the forefront of national innovation.

What Is the ID Seal?

The ID Seal is a certification awarded to companies that demonstrate a consistent, structured, and methodical approach to R&D, in line with international standards outlined in the Frascati Manual (OECD).

To obtain the seal, companies must submit documentation proving the existence of active R&D projects, with clear objectives, qualified technical teams, structured methodologies, and measurable results. The evaluation also considers the presence of internal innovation management processes, intellectual property strategies, and collaboration with universities, research centres, or other entities within the National Science and Technology System.

The certification is valid for two years and can be renewed if the company continues to meet the requirements and maintains strong R&D practices.

What Is It For?

The ID Seal serves multiple strategic, operational, and institutional purposes:

  • Official recognition of R&D activities: It helps position the company as an innovation-driven organisation, enhancing its reputation among clients, investors, and partners.
  • Facilitates access to R&D tax incentives: It simplifies the process of applying for SIFIDE (the Portuguese tax incentive scheme for business R&D), allowing companies to recover part of their R&D investments through IRC (corporate income tax) deductions.
  • Strengthens eligibility for public funding: The seal may be beneficial—or even required—when applying for national or European funding programmes such as Portugal 2030, PRR, or Horizon Europe.
  • Encourages structured innovation management: The certification process helps companies organise and formalise their innovation strategies, improving project planning, documentation, and impact assessment.

What Are the Benefits for Companies?

Holding the ID Seal brings clear competitive advantages, especially for companies operating in sectors where innovation is a key differentiator. Main benefits include:

1. Concrete tax savings

The ID Seal streamlines SIFIDE applications by validating R&D practices in advance. For companies investing significantly in R&D, this can lead to substantial fiscal benefits — with potential recovery of up to 82.5% of eligible R&D expenses. For start-ups and SMEs, this can directly support reinvestment and growth.

2. Institutional recognition and credibility

Certification by ANI positions the company within Portugal’s official network of recognised R&D-performing entities. This enhances its reputation in the innovation ecosystem, especially when engaging with public bodies, potential investors, and large industrial or technological partners.

3. Easier access to strategic partnerships

The seal facilitates collaborations with research institutions, universities, and other technology-based organisations. Many of these partnerships — involving co-development projects, academic research, or joint applications for funding — either require or strongly favour companies with certified R&D activity.

4. Attracting and retaining talent

R&D professionals and technical experts are drawn to companies that foster structured innovation, experimentation, and problem-solving. The ID Seal signals a workplace environment that supports continuous learning and high-impact development.

5. Strengthens internal maturity

Preparing for the ID Seal requires structured project documentation, data tracking, and process clarity. This internal organisation creates lasting value by promoting a disciplined, goal-oriented innovation culture across teams.

What Distinguishes a Company with the ID Seal?

Certified companies share several key characteristics:

  • In-house technical and scientific expertise
  • Well-defined R&D projects with documented goals, methods, and progress
  • Intellectual property generation, such as patents, algorithms, or novel software
  • Knowledge production in their respective industries
  • Active participation in innovation networks and research collaborations
  • A clear path from research to application, with tangible outcomes in the form of new products, services, or processes

The Relevance of the ID Seal for Enlitia

At Enlitia, innovation is at the core of our mission. Receiving the ID Seal is official recognition of what has always been part of our DNA: combining data science and advanced engineering to address the challenges of the energy transition. This certification validates our ongoing R&D work — from developing proprietary algorithms for power forecasting and fault detection, to implementing predictive maintenance and data quality models in a scalable architecture designed for real-world energy systems.

The Seal formally recognises Enlitia’s suitability to carry out R&D activities in the technical-scientific domains of Energy – Smart Cities, Renewable Energy, Optimisation of Energy Transport and Storage, and ICT & Smart Energy Grids.

More than a distinction, the ID Seal reinforces our commitment to building solutions grounded in research, precision, and real impact. It strengthens our ability to grow, collaborate, and keep innovating — with confidence and credibility.
