When Curtailment Is Strategic: How Data Transforms Red Flags into Confident Decisions

Not every underperformance alert means something is wrong.
Sometimes, it means someone made the right call.

In July 2025, one of Enlitia’s solar clients experienced a significant dropping production across an entire plant. Our platform flagged all inverters as critical. The performance data was clear: the asset was underproducing relative to expected output.

But there were no faults. No grid events. And irradiance was high.

What appeared to be a system-wide problem turned out to be a data-informed strategy. And Enlitia’s platform helped support it in real time.

A critical alert, with no fault in sight

Enlitia’s performance algorithms continuously monitor asset behaviour against expected production profiles. When the alert came in, it was flagged as critical:

  • All inverters were underperforming,
  • Energy losses were rising,
  • No fault codes or external triggers were detected.

The asset manager confirmed what we suspected: the plant had been intentionally curtailed.

“Everything’s fine. We made a strategic decision to curtail production. With energy prices at marginal or negative levels, it didn’t make sense to generate.”

This wasn’t an error. It was a deliberate financial decision based on market conditions.

Curtailment, driven by real-time intelligence

The decision wasn’t made in hindsight. It was supported by real-time data, delivered through Enlitia’s Planner and Performance modules.

The asset manager was able to:

  • Compare expected vs. actual production,
  • Analyse market price forecasts for the hours ahead,
  • Validate the economic logic behind curtailing production.

Having forecast and performance data in one place gave them the confidence to act.

“The integrated forecast and performance view really helps us decide whether or not to keep producing.”

A smarter response, and a better platform

Beyond enabling the right decision, the use case helped shape how the platform evolves.

The client requested two specific improvements:

  • The ability to classify strategic curtailments as non-losses, so they wouldn’t be misrepresented in performance reports
  • Enhancements to the market price forecast model, to support even more accurate planning

Both of these requests are now influencing our roadmap.

From alarm to action

This story highlights something important: asset managers don’t just need alerts. They need context.

Enlitia helps turn system behaviour into strategy by showing not only what happened, but why - and what should happen next.

That’s the shift our clients are looking for: from reactive monitoring to intelligent, operational planning.
